Rent Supplement Program
    The Rent Supplement Programs have been established by Federal and Provincial Governments to help address the housing need throughout Alberta.

    Red Deer Housing Authority (RDHA) administers these programs for Red Deer, Sylvan Lake, Rocky Mountain House, Innisfail and area.

    Subsidy payments to private landlords and tenants are issued directly by RDHA.

    Amount of Assistance

    The amount of assistance is based on household size requirements.

    Subsidy maximums are listed below:*

      1 Bedroom - $300
      2 Bedroom - $350
      3 Bedroom - $400
      4 Bedroom - $450

    * Subsidies are based on Alberta Housing and Urban Affairs Eligibility Regulations.

    Applications

    People interested in the Rent Supplement program may complete a form on:
    Wednesdays and Thursdays : 9:00 – 11:30 am and 1:00 – 3:30 pm at the RDHA office.

    Eligibility

    To qualify, applicants must be Canadian Citizens, independent landed immigrants, or government sponsored landed immigrants. Assets and belongings cannot exceed $7,000.

    Total household income cannot be more than the maximum income limits permitted under the program:

    The program is open to people who are renting a legal suite (e.g. apartment, duplex, townhouse).

    Proof of Income and Rent

    Applicants must provide verification of their current income and proof of their rent (i.e. lease agreement)

    Waiting List

    The waiting list is based on priority of need – those with the greatest need are offered the next available rent supplement.

Community Housing Program
    Community Housing is provided to assist families who, because of their income, cannot obtain adequate accommodation at the current market rate. Community Housing consists of duplexes, townhouses or apartments. Priority is given to families with dependent children living in poor or overcrowded housing conditions or paying a high percentage of their income for rent. We allocate housing based on need according to government regulations.

    The rent for Community Housing is calculated from the gross income (total family earnings) and is equal to 30% of that amount. The rent includes heat and water. The tenant is responsible for electricity and any hook-up costs.

    Qualifications:

  1. Each applicant must have lived or worked in the area for the last three (3) months
  2. Each applicant must have dependent children
  3. Each applicant must have less than $7,000. in assets (not including household furnishings)
  4. Rent is based on thirty percent (30%) of each tenants GROSS family income (before deductions)
  5. NO PETS PERMITTED

Wednesdays and Thursdays : 9:00 – 11:30 am and 1:00 – 3:30 pm at the RDHA office.

Types of Housing:

The Housing Authority manages and maintains a total of 309 units. Of these:

  • 289 in Red Deer
  • 13 in Innisfail
  • 7 in Sylvan Lake

These units vary in size and include 2, 3, and 4 bedroom townhouses, duplexes and single family dwellings and all have a fenced back yard. We also have a twenty-six (26) suite apartment building, a ten (10) suite building for people with Schizophrenia. Seventeen (17) units are wheel chair accessible.
